ARAUCO receives award for AI application in forestry

The forestry subsidiary was honored in the first edition of the Chile PotencIA National Artificial Intelligence Award, in the Large Company category, for its “Harvest Quality” project, an IT solution that incorporates artificial intelligence into forest management to strengthen efficiency, traceability, and responsible resource management.

The award—sponsored by Fundación País Digital together with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation—selected four winning initiatives out of more than 600 applications nationwide.

“Harvest Quality” combines images captured by drones and deep learning models to identify pieces of wood in the field, estimate volumes, and quantify losses, moving from visual assessments to verifiable data. As a result, the tool has reduced wood loss from 3% to 1%.

Currently, the system can monitor around 950 hectares per month and plans to expand its coverage to 50% of the company’s harvest, contributing to more accurate, transparent, and sustainable forest management.
