ARAUCO will be certified as the world’s first carbon neutral forestry company

Empresas Copec’s subsidiary plans to be certified as a carbon neutral company by 2020. To this end, an independent firm will measure different aspects related to its carbon footprint and the capture of emissions from its forests, among others.

In an interview with Diario Pulso, ARAUCO Corporate and Commercial Affairs Manager, Charles Kimber, said: “We are part of a group of 600 companies committed to reducing our emissions by 2030, in a program called Science Based Targets, which has science-based targets. Thus, we have worked for a long time searching for opportunities to reduce emissions”.

It should be noted that this initiative proposes not only to reduce emissions from the forestry company, but also from its suppliers. In this way, it seeks to generate a chain reaction, increasing the scope of this global initiative. “This considers products generated by third parties, transported by third parties, and also the emissions generated as a result of the delivery of these products to the markets. They include emissions from railways and maritime or land transport and also the adhesives, which are used in the panel industry. All are services produced by others, but that we must count,” Kimber added.

It should be noted that the commitment of ARAUCO also considers making changes in its processes, in the use of fuels and in the operation of cogeneration units. This way, the target is to gradually reduce all these emissions over the next ten years, to reduce them by 32.5% compared to 2017.
