The R&D center belonging to the forestry subsidiary ARAUCO celebrated more than three decades of promoting applied science and innovation for a more resilient and efficient forestry industry that is better prepared for the challenges of the future.
Created in 1990 in Coronel, Bioforest was born with a long-term vision: to generate and apply high-level scientific knowledge to strengthen ARAUCO’s sustainability, competitiveness, and international projection, anticipating the environmental, productive, and technological challenges that today dominate the global agenda.
“These 35 years reflect a deep conviction: that science, research, and innovation are key to building a sustainable and competitive forestry industry. At Bioforest, we constantly seek to challenge and push our own boundaries of knowledge, developing solutions that allow us to anticipate challenges such as climate change, genetic resilience, and the transition to a more sustainable economy,” said Sebastián Mandiola, Bioforest’s R&D manager.
This year, one of its most emblematic developments, the GloNi project —a fast-growing eucalyptus with high-value pulp— received the PwC Innovation Award and the CPC Biobío Innovation Award. In addition to this, there have been breakthroughs in clonal silviculture, genomic selection, textile pulp, and waste recovery, which are now integrated into the company’s operations.
