The goal of this agreement is to preserve, restore, and strengthen the biodiversity of the Mapocho River Urban Wetland in the municipality of Maipú. The initiative aims to protect this key biological corridor within an urban setting, which connects ecosystems, facilitates the migration of wildlife, and serves as a natural refuge.
The plan considers community engagement, land management, and scientific research, including signage for the area, control of threats such as waste or invasive species, and the implementation of educational programs with neighbors, social organizations, and educational institutions.
“Maipú holds a fundamental place in Copec’s history. That is why we are very pleased to join this partnership to protect and preserve this wetland, an ecosystem of immense value to the municipality and the city,” stated Arturo Natho, CEO of Copec. The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to protect 39 ecosystems by 2034 and integrates the joint work that Copec and Fundación Kennedy have been carrying out since 2018 to protect urban wetlands in Chile.
