INNOVATION AT THE CORE

For Empresas Copec and its subsidiaries, research, development and innovation are key to being able to anticipate and adapt to increasingly challenging and constantly evolving environments. Thus, the companies have been incorporating technologies such as Big Data, artificial intelligence, internet of things and robotics, among others, into their production and commercial processes.

INNOVATION AT THE CORE

INNOVATION IN PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

DISSOLVING PULP

In 2022, the product reached a production of 272 thousand tons (ADt), achieving a market share of 5.2%.

In 2020, ARAUCO produced its first dissolving pulp in Chile. This pioneering project required an investment of approximately US$190 million and involved converting the Valdivia mill into a reversible facility capable of producing paper pulp and dissolving pulp, according to market needs. Dissolving pulp, which has environmental and production advantages over cotton, is marketed mainly in Asia and is used as a raw material in the manufacture of viscose and rayon fabrics.

WOOD AS THE MATERIAL OF THE FUTURE

According to a UN study, by 2030 new housing will be needed for three billion people, so wood arises as one of the most convenient options to streamline processes in an environmentally friendly way. This is because, for every cubic meter of wood used, one ton of CO2 is stored. In addition, it reduces execution times by 50%.

Telemetry for the industrial sector

Abastible developed a telemetry system that uses the Internet of Things (IoT) to measure, in real time and remotely, the level of liquefied gas in bulk tanks.

MEASUREMENT AND VERIFICATION OF SAVINGS AND EMISSIONS USING BLOCKCHAIN

Abastible launched a new service, unique in Latin America, which allows companies and organizations to trace the energy and environmental impact of their energy efficiency projects.

Thanks to this initiative, customers can transform intangible assets (emission reductions and/or energy savings) into traceable and transparent digital assets.

INNOVATION PLATFORMS

BIOFOREST

Research and development are essential to ensure long-term sustainability. To this end, ARAUCO created Bioforest, a high quality research center at the service of people.

The center develops several initiatives and scientific projects that seek to increase and improve knowledge about the ecosystems we inhabit.

FORESTRY

In-depth knowledge of the soils, environment and forest species that ARAUCO cultivates, in order to optimize and maximize their growth in plantations and timber production, in addition to complying with environmental goals for the conservation and protection of the biodiversity present in ARAUCO’s native forest.

BIOCEL

Optimize production processes, pulp product development, and technologies for treating and transforming waste into by-products that add value to the company. To this end, ARAUCO simulates different pulp production processes and analyzes critical process and product parameters.

BIO-PANELS

Given ARAUCO’s worldwide relevance in the manufacture of panels for the furniture and construction industries, research is focused on improving the production processes of panel manufacturing, on studying the physical and mechanical properties of the products, searching for new adhesives and on developing new products.

WIND COPEC + WIND GARAGE

Developing comprehensive and sustainable solutions to continue facilitating people’s lives on the move, propelling the company and countries into the future. From WIND Garage, innovative ideas are identified, designed, incubated and scaled to respond to the needs of a new era.

Through WIND Copec we make progress in innovation and new developments in the areas of mobility, energy and artificial intelligence. It is a space designed to generate, incubate and scale new ideas and projects that can evolve into new businesses.

ALLIANCES WITH INNOVATION CENTERS

By supporting specialized innovation centers, Empresas Copec and its subsidiaries demonstrate their commitment to the development of innovative solutions to respond to the environmental, social and economic challenges of an increasingly dynamic and demanding environment.
