In an effort to diversify its sources and ensure energy supply, the forestry subsidiary is developing two large-scale wind power initiatives in the Biobío and Ñuble regions. Both have entered the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA, for its acronym in Spanish).
The most recent, called Tulipanes Wind Farm, is located in the municipalities of Quilleco and Los Ángeles, in the Biobío region, and involves an estimated investment of US$625 million, the construction of 57 7.2 MW wind turbines, for an installed capacity of up to 410.4 MW, in addition to a battery energy storage system (BESS) and a 220 kV line of approximately 28 km to the Las Canteras substation.
Meanwhile, Las Fresias Wind Farm, located in the municipality of Yungay, Ñuble region, has been undergoing environmental assessment since April 2025 and recently submitted both its Technical Addendum and Citizen Addendum. The initiative includes 43 wind turbines for up to 310 MW, as well as storage and transmission infrastructure, with an investment of nearly US$500 million.
“Our energy trajectory was initially built on forest biomass, integrated into industrial processes,” explained Mauricio Leiva, Chief of Sustainability at ARAUCO’s Wind Business. “Today, we are expanding that base with wind projects that allow us to diversify generation and accompany the growth of the electrical system,” he added.
